The Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter, a coalition operating within the UN framework since 2020 to protect the principles of the Charter and multilateralism, reaffirmed its “unwavering solidarity with the people and Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”
The statement was released by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry and notes that the group raised its voice to express “deep concern” over the escalation of hostile actions and rhetoric from the United States in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly directed against Venezuela.
Likewise, the group of 18 nations urged the US government to “de-escalate its actions and rhetoric in the region.”

Concern is particularly focused on the recent deployment of US military forces in that region, which includes nuclear-capable assets, which the group describes as a “direct escalation of hostile actions and threats against Venezuela.”
Along these lines, the nations strongly condemn the threat of the use of force against the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of the South American nation.
Furthermore, the UN group expressed its strong support for the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace and Free of Nuclear Weapons, a commitment established by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in 2014 and enshrined in the 1967 Treaty of Tlatelolco.
It also emphasizes the sovereign right of peoples to determine their own destinies without external interference and the commitment to resolve disputes peacefully.
The aggression between the United States and Venezuela has increased since last August, with the deployment of more than 4,000 additional Marines, three destroyers (the USS Gravely, the USS Jason Dunham, and the USS Sampson), an attack submarine, and other military equipment in the southern Caribbean, near the Venezuelan coast.
Washington justified these actions under the pretext of fighting drug cartels.
However, the Venezuelan government categorically rejected these accusations of drug trafficking, calling them a pretext by Washington to attack Venezuela.
The Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter is composed of Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, China, Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Laos, Mali, Nicaragua, Palestine, Russia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe
